"Well, the turtle had a point!" By Shravan B Nair
Let me tell you an ‘exciting’ story: There was, once upon a time, a turtle
and a rabbit that one day held a race. The rabbit should have won with
his eyes blindfolded, but sadly his dreariness overcame him and off he
went to the land of dreams. Guess who won the race: the turtle. “Slow
and steady wins the race” were the words that he offered us as tutelage.
But who listens to talking turtles anyway?
Look around you: who can you point out, in this 21st century of ours,
who is slow and steady? I bet you were not even able to find a single
one.
Nowadays, people are travelling so fast, so fast that even light is losing
its composure. Keep up with us, will you Mr. Light? Who can boldly say
that they were greeted on the road this morning, or that they have never
missed breakfast in their entire lives? Admit it: we don’t have time
anymore for the simple things of life. It’s okay, we think to ourselves, at
least we are very productive. Put your hands up in the air and drop your
excuses to the ground, because you have been caught red-handed for
your lies, my friend. Humans are not getting “very productive” at all.
Not even a single bit.
Don’t believe me? You soon will, once you hear me out. People in the
past lived at the pace of snails compared to us. So slow that we would be
shocked. Just imagine taking hours and hours to finish dinner? Ah, that
is a luxury that we can never dream of. We would think they would be
the most unproductive people ever to walk Mother Earth, wouldn’t we?
However, we were wrong in our beliefs. Most of the inventions that we
boast we *ourselves* created were, in fact, discovered ages ago by our
ancestors. Be it earthquake detectors, alarm clocks, cataract surgery,
lenses, automated doors, batteries, central heating systems, or robots,
our old Homo Sapiens had beat us to it.
So, keep this in mind: you DO NOT have to skip breakfast in order to be
more ‘productive’. Just take it “slow and steady”, because that’s all you
need to win the “race of life” Thank you, turtle guy from my old bedtime
stories! (Note: I never thought I would say that, not even once!)
