"Tom, Jerry, and Trump" by Shravan B Nair

Trump’s impeachment was not fair. Wait! Before you disregard this article thinking that it is one of those Republican rants, hear me out, please. This is NOT an article in defence of Trump; this is an article in defence of justice around the world. Moreover, I am NOT a republican. Talking about parties does not even interest me. Why should I talk about political party influences when Nancy and Trump have time to do that all day? I am busier than them; I don’t have time to waste (you don’t believe me, do you?). I wanted to tell you something else entirely.

We all remember Tom and Jerry, don’t we? That show where a cat chases a mouse throughout the whole episode. And if I were to ask you who your favourite character was in this show, I am quite certain that almost 99.9% of you will say Jerry. Of course, look at him. Aww! Isn’t he cute? Such a nice, little mouse. On the other hand, what do we say about Tom? Tom, that bad, bad cat. The one who wants to kill poor, innocent Jerry. Uh, Tom should be hanged: that’s the punishment for bad cats!

But is Jerry all that angelic or Tom all that evil? I refuse to believe that a mouse that bangs the head of an innocent cat with a baseball bat, and then calls its dog friend to chase the cat out of the house and into the cold, is a good one. And guess what happens at the end! The mouse acts as if this was all just a mistake and that the cat deserved it, and I just feel like crying. Tom, all alone, always ready to compromise with Jerry. Nobody understands how good Tom is at heart because he acts like the bad guy. It is not his fault that he is a predator; all cats chase mice, that is how the world is, and Tom should not be castigated and scolded for this.

This is the exact case in the White House now. Trump seems like a bad person, doesn’t he? He seems cruel. He seems malicious. But many of the things he does have benefited America. We do not see this, however, because he acts like the villain, and it is easier for us to believe that he is a “national security threat” than a good, old Joe. He is the real-life Tom, always criticised for his natural behaviour, bombarded with negative thoughts out in the cold, dark streets of New York City. We think that all the other American presidents in history were Jerrys; people who are kind-hearted, people who have never done anything wrong. Are you sure about that? The truth is, we don’t really know. They all acted nice in the face of media, so nice that we would never suspect them of being bad. But we have never seen their call-history, so how can we be so sure that they are not a “national security threat”?

Finally, Trump is not getting impeached because of his “obstruction of Congress” or his ”abuse of power”, he is getting impeached because of his arrogant behaviour. If Trump was a smiling president who hugs children and visits elderly homes on TV, half of us would not believe he did anything wrong. Instead, we would believe he had a “perfect” phone call with Zelensky. It was probably just a call to check if Zelensky’s family was doing well back in Ukraine, we would say. Think about what I just said and go back to your old habits of watching Tom and Jerry. You never know, maybe a simple show of a cat chasing a mouse could open a new window of perspectives! Let’s just hope that the perspectives we get don’t need to be used again, and that no future American presidents get impeached because of their mannerisms. Please, I can’s stand another drama like this again. Can you?
